This post is going to be sort of a behind the scenes post as well as letting people know that I have added the Leaf Aptus 65 into my work flow offering 16bit 28 megapixel 150mb files. Alicia really enjoys cookies so I decided that I would shoot a photo for her of milk and cookies. Having never shot food before, this was challenging. I feel that the image is strong although there is definitely room for improvement as far as lighting and styling go. One thing that I pride myself with is the ability to deliver images to a client straight out the camera with no retouching required. People are often skeptical about this so I have shot pictures from the start to finish of this image. You will also see exactly what I saw through the viewfinder. This was shot with a Hasselblad 501cm, Zeiss 150mm f/4 with hasselblad extension tube. Exposure was 1/250, f/16, iso 50. This was lit from above and to the right using a small Lightrein stripbox with two small white reflectors camera left.

I started with the cup and the backdrop roughly where I wanted it.

Vancouver Panoramics

I was in Vancouver at the end of November last year and shot a few panoramics. I will be going back soon and plan on shooting more of the gorgeous city. These ones are composed of 15-20 shots each shot with either a 70-200 or 17-55. Here they are, followed by a 100% crop to show the detail.

Patrick Emokpae – Kick Boxer

I have been slacking on my blog so here I am playing catch up. Patrick (Golds Gym, Westmount Mall) called me looking for some some unique shots to promote his kickboxing course that he taught. I had never shot kickboxing or any form of martial arts before so this was a new experience for me. Patrick told me that he had not been involved in the sport for too long and that he just wanted some basic shots. Not settling for standard issues shots I set up a few strobes, one larger Lightrein strip light and two gridded reflectors. Some of the final shots are posted below.

Gymnastics

In November I had the opportunity to collaborate with an old friend, Jeff Mortenson. Jeff and I went to high school together and have stayed in touch over the past few years. We have always talked about getting together and doing a shoot but our schedules had never matched up. Jeff is a very very busy person having spent a year in Las Vegas as the lead role in Cirque Du Soleil. After his year in the states he moved to Vancouver to dance. Jeff has been involved with dancing and gymnastics for his entire life so we thought it would be suiting to do a gymnastics themed shoot. After a couple hours of brainstorming I decided I wanted the photos to be more technical than most gymnastic shots out there. I wanted to focus on the form and movement of Jeff rather than Jeff himself.

The shots below have utilized one or two lights with modifiers ranging from reflectors with grids to various sized and shaped softboxes. I was recording video with a d300s and capturing images with a d300 coupled with a wide array of lenses. If you have any questions on the lighting or other gear used please feel free to ask questions in the comment section below.

I trust you will enjoy these images to the same degree that I enjoyed shooting them.

Latest shots

I have been out shooting more with the d300s and finally have some day shots! So far I can say that the subtle changes on the back of the camera make life easier, especially the dedicated center button on the d-pad. The high iso on this camera is still blowing my mind. I will do a formal test in the next couple weeks and post it up here. There is a noticeable improvement over the d300. Here are some photos for your viewing pleasure. All of these are straight out of camera. Any effects were done using a filter system.

This may be my last post for a little while as am in Vancouver next week shooting. Be prepared for some rad commercial photos of something you wouldn’t expect when I come back!

This image was shot during one of our camping trips to Jasper this summer. The models are Eric and Jasmine setting up their tent after dark and set. This was shot with a d300 and a sigma 10-20, fired remotely using a wireless shutter release on the bulb setting.
